Discussing the Main Differences Between the Scissor Lift and the Cherry Picker

When you have a need to work at height, making sure that you take precautions so you can get the right level of access and complete the job to a high standard while keeping yourself and others safe is essential, and equipment like the scissor lift and the cherry picker can be an ideal way to meet these requirements.

Aerial work platforms can make great alternatives to ladders, offering a safer and sturdier platform to work at height, they can bear a higher weight load, including multiple people at a time, as well as the tools required, plus there is less mobility involved; without having to repeatedly climbing up and down, which can also help with project efficiency and productivity.

If there is a scissor lift and a cherry picker debate in your head and you are unsure which is most suitable for your project, keep reading to explore some of the benefits associated with each to help you make an informed final decision.

Introducing the Scissor Lift

Let us start off by looking at the scissor lift vs cherry picker debate with highlighting some of the benefits that scissor lifts can provide. A scissor lift works in a vertical movement, the platform rising with the personnel on it to allow them to get the height and access needed to complete the job. Many scissor lifts offer ample platform space which can be good if multiple people need to be raised or if space is needed for tools and materials.

A scissor lift is fairly compact and takes up minimal floor space, and this makes it ideal for working in tighter areas, indoor spaces, and places where there is less room for movement and storage. They are typically cheaper as they provide a simpler motion when compared to a cherry picker, offering only elevation and little to no outreach. But if your job only requires vertical movement, scissor lift hire may be the more cost-effective option.

Exploring the Cherry Picker

We have taken a look at how a scissor lift may benefit you, now let us explore the cherry picker and the benefits they can provide your project.

A cherry picker may be more appropriate when greater heights are involved in the project. A cherry picker extends upwards much more than a scissor lift can, and also has the ability for further outreach and can provide better mobility with forward motions too. So if you are trying to access an awkward spot or there is something in the way, and you need to go over it, a cherry picker may be the better option.

Cherry pickers are great for time saving and productivity, as you are not constantly climbing up and down a ladder to reposition it every time you need to reach something that is slightly out of reach; the arm of the cherry picker can be moved to the location you need it in a quick and easy manner. It can also save time when it comes to setting up instead of having to erect and dismantle scaffolding.

Compared to scissor lifts, cherry pickers are the more expensive option, however, with the extra range of motion and height that it provides, cherry picker hire is a worthwhile investment.

Making the Right Choice for your Project

While it is good to compare and try and add up the benefits and drawbacks, ultimately the machine you need will depend on the requirements of your project. Assessing your job and recognising what it involves will be the determining factor for choosing a scissor lift or a cherry picker. The nature of the job, its location, and the number of personnel and tools involved can make the difference between deciding to opt for a scissor lift or looking into cherry picker hire. So taking these factors into account and carrying out risk assessments, will be the best way to make your final decision.

How to Choose the Right MEWP for Your Construction Project

A key part of safely working at heights is making sure that you have the right MEWP for the job. This can make all the difference for the smooth running of the project with no two jobs exactly alike. This is why we’re committed to making sure that you have access to the right MEWP hire here at Cherry Picker. We’re amongst the foremost sellers and hire firms in Ireland, offering all sorts of MEWPs to our customers, making sure you have everything you need to get the job done safely and accurately.

What is a MEWP?

MEWP stands for Mobile Elevated Working Platform, which, as the name suggests, provides a platform that allows a person or persons to carry out work at height in a safe manner. These can include things like scissor lifts and cherry pickers. Choosing the right one of these can seriously change the way that you handle a job, which is why it’s important to have the right one.

We know that it can be difficult to know which will work best for you but we’d like to offer you some advice taken from our considerable experience in the industry. Not only would we like to introduce you to the many MEWPs available but we would be happy to arrange for you to hire or purchase one from us.

You can do this by getting in touch with us today, either by calling us on +353 1 835 4788 for hiring purposes or 0818 228 229 for purchases or by emailing us at sales@cherrypicker.ie

How do you Choose the Correct MEWP for your Construction Project?

  • Start with your Location

Your location is perhaps one of the most influential factors when picking out your MEWP because some locations are just completely unsuitable for certain MEWPs. For example, cherry pickers are entirely unsuitable for uneven ground, where they could easily topple over, posing a serious risk to the health and safety of those running the machinery. There are sturdier options available and our team would be more than happy to advise you if that’s what you need.

You’ll also want to consider how high you want to reach while working. Every MEWP works at their own unique height and it couldn’t be more important for you to make sure you have the right height for your project. Working with an MEWP that is too short for your needs will significantly increase your risk of slipping and falling, resulting in life threatening injuries.

Take some time to really consider the height that you need to get to and if you’re sure, then you should always lean on the side of caution and either purchase or hire something a little taller than your needs.

  • Consider How Many People you Have to Help

Different MEWPs require different numbers of people to operate. Some only require one person to effectively operate the entire system, while others need significantly more. Take some time to consider how many people will be working on the project and which will be the safest solution for all your needs. Again, this is something that we can help you with if you need a specific solution to  a problem.

  • Review How Much Space you Have

Space is another important aspect that you should review before you pick your MEWP. Fortunately, there are so many different MEWPs available to you choose from, allowing you to fit them in almost any space. For example, if you’re working in quite a tight space, you’ll want to consider using a spider lift, which is small enough and mobile enough to be used in almost any location. For the sake of ease and efficiency, perhaps you’ll want to take some measurements before you start looking at different options, just to make sure that you have the space.

We’d also recommend ensuring that you’ve double checked how much height you have. Ceilings, overhead lines, and tree branches can all pose a risk to the safety of those on the platform. It’s important that you make sure your MEWP is going to hit the right height without risking the health and safety of those working at height. Some MEWPs are better suited for working in these sorts of conditions, for example battery scissor lifts, which are ideal for indoor work.

  • Inspect the Ground Conditions

It’s important for you to take some time to properly review the ground conditions in your working area before you bring in an MEWP. As you might expect, these platforms are usually incredibly heavy and the wrong ground conditions will see the machine sinking into the ground, de-stabilising the platform, resulting in injuries or even loss of life. Some MEWPs are more stable than others but other times, you’ll need to wait until the ground conditions have improved slighting before choosing the lightest and most stable MEWP available.

  • Make Sure it Works for the Amount of Work you Need it to do

Another big influencing factor in choosing the right MEWP is knowing what you need to do with it. Some MEWPs need to be manually moved once the platform has been returned to ground level (like cherry pickers), while others can be moved while extended (like scissor lifts). These are both great choices for different situations.

Cherry pickers are ideal if you need to reach across to reach things, like wires or tree branches, but don’t need to stay at height while moving. On the other hand, if you’re painting a ceiling or in some other similar situation, then you’ll want a scissor lift, which is safe to move and can be controlled from the platform rather than the ground.

  • Which MEWPs are your Staff Trained to Work with?

If your staff hasn’t been trained to work with particular MEWPs, then it’s a good idea to choose something else instead. Remember that MEWPs are potentially incredibly dangerous and not taking the time to really understand how they work can end in disaster for everyone involved. Always choose the platforms they know rather than something that could throw them off and risk their health and safety.

Important Safety Tips for Cherry Picker Hire

Here at Cherry Picker, we are committed to providing customers with high quality cherry picker hire at an affordable price. As one of Ireland’s foremost cherry picker hire firms, we’re committed to providing you with all the equipment that you need to work at height. We hire out battery and diesel lifts and UDrives / Self Drives, which allow you to reach heights of up to 60ft. However, it is the safety of clients while using our cherry pickers that is paramount. Working at height is always a risk.

There are so many things that can go wrong while working off the ground and the injuries that can be sustained can be life threatening. Falls are one of the biggest causes of death and serious injury while working with cherry pickers but there are other situations that can pose a risk to you or your colleagues. Fortunately, there are ways for you to minimise this risk. The right level of care and the correct training can seriously diminish the risks associated with working at height.

To help you make sure that both you and those around you are as safe as possible, we have a few important safety tips that you should bear in mind when planning your cherry picker hire

Choose the Correct Equipment

Not every piece of equipment that we stock is going to be the right choice for the project you’re working on. One problem that you might encounter is the boom being too small to take you where you need to go. Our smallest cherry picker can take you to a height of just 20 ft, which isn’t always high enough. It is important you don’t hire the 20 ft cherry picker if you need to go higher, even if the height difference is just a few feet.

While taller cherry pickers will be slightly more expensive to hire, it’s important that you prioritise safety in this situation. The risks that come with leaning too far out of the cherry picker to reach something or, worse, adding in a step ladder to boost your height, are too high to ignore. With so many options for the height of our cherry pickers, this is a really easy way for you to ensure the safety of those around you.

Check the Ground Conditions

Once you’ve hired your cherry picker and it’s arrived, you need to make sure that the land is actually able to cope with the presence of the picker. Before you start working, take the time to check the ground. It needs to be firm enough to not sink under the weight of the cherry picker and it also needs to be as even as possible. Soft ground will not make for a solid position for your cherry picker and it makes it difficult to move the cherry picker around the area you need.

Additionally, uneven ground could quickly lead to the cherry picker tipping over once the boom has been extended. As a matter of fact, uneven ground is such a risk to cherry pickers that we would recommend picking a different access platform entirely. There are other options that are more appropriate for uneven ground, keeping you and your colleagues safe from tipping, falling and crushing. Save cherry pickers for flat, even ground, like concrete or building interiors.

Whether you’re working inside or outside, it’s important for you to check what’s above the cherry picker as much as you check what’s below it. Overhead wires and ceilings may well be lower than they look and not being aware of them can put those in the cherry picker at risk. Crush injuries are common amongst cherry picker users who rise too high.

Use your Common Sense

It might seem like a silly thing to emphasise, but you’d be surprised by just how many people are injured while using cherry pickers because they have leaned too far out. This can be a particular temptation when doing things like chopping down trees, which can seem just within reach. But this risk is totally unnecessary as cherry pickers are designed to be movable.

You can reposition the tower at any time, to make sure that you’re actually able to reach what you’re working on. This only takes a few moments and ensures that your two feet will stay firmly on the platform, totally safe from the risk of falling. It’s easy to exercise some common sense while working with a cherry picker, and this common sense might just save your life.

Carry Out a Risk Assessment Before you Start

All jobs that involve a cherry picker should have a full risk assessment completed with specific steps taken to make sure that everyone is as safe as possible. This can include things like clearing the area of lollygaggers and people trying to distract the worker on the platform. You might want to even set up a perimeter around where you’re working to make sure that you’re as safe as possible. Taking these sorts of steps can seriously reduce the risks to you and your colleagues while using cherry pickers. And that should be your top priority.

Train your Staff

Whoever is working with the cherry picker should really be fully trained to work at heights. This sort of training ensures that they are familiar with the equipment when it arrives. Properly training for working at heights is arguably the most effective and important safety precaution you can take as it ensures that they will be able to act responsibly and safely during your work day.

If your staff don’t work at heights often, then we would recommend ensuring they regularly undertake the safety training just to make sure that they are up to day. With this knowledge fresh in their minds, they’ll be able to ensure that you meet all the safety requirements, keeping everyone working at heights and on the ground as safe as possible.

No matter what your plans might be for working at height, following these tips will ensure that you do so with limited risk or opportunity for accidents. And, with our flexible range of hire hoists and access platforms, you can rest assured that we’re also doing our bit to guarantee your safety. So, if you do need the help of a cherry picker, then don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team today

Safety Suggestions to Remember when Exploring Boom Lift Hire

Working at height is a common task in industries such as construction and maintenance work, and boom lift hire is a great way to reach higher levels in a sturdier and safer way than a ladder.

A boom lift is an aerial work platform used to lift people, materials and tools to a higher level, giving them access to areas that are unable to be or unsafe to reach via a ladder. A boom lift features a hydraulic arm to which a bucket or platform is attached, which is where the personnel stand. Jobs such as; construction, window washing, roofing, and warehouse work are some examples of industries that may find boom lift hire useful.

Understanding and assessing the risks associated with using a boom lift before your boom lift hire is necessary for implementing the appropriate safety precautions to avoid accidents and injuries as much as possible. If you are exploring boom lift hire in Dublin, take a look at some of the safety suggestions listed below.

Choosing the Correct Lift

Choosing the correct lift at the start of your project is necessary for safety and for completing the task correctly and to a high standard. There are a number of boom lifts available, so taking the time to assess the job that needs doing can help you better understand what you need, in order to complete the project.

Understanding the nature of the project and its requirements can help you to make an informed, logical decision for your boom lift hire. Considering factors like; the height you need to reach, the weight it will need to take, whether it is an indoor or outdoor task and the terrain it will be resting on, can be helpful when making your decision.

Trained Operators

First and foremost, making sure the people using and operating the boom lift have the necessary training is essential. Before your boom lift hire, ensure you have the relevant employees in place. Having trained staff to complete this task is necessary for the safety of everybody involved and for getting the project done correctly and safely. Trained staff can also mean the project is completed in a more efficient manner, helping to minimise the risk of mistakes or a lower quality result.

Surroundings

Taking note of your surroundings before using the boom lift is important. You do not want anything or anybody in the way when the boom lift is in operation. You do not want to be moving the lift only to accidentally knock someone over or perhaps have something fall over the side and land on somebody. Assessing the situation before using the boom lift and good communication during its operation can help reduce the risk of these instances. Considering the terrain your lift will be situated on is also important to bear in mind.

Safety Equipment

Safety equipment is a must when working at height and on a boom lift, so ensuring you have the equipment, such as harnesses, hard hats, and other necessary protective clothing and any other equipment, is important to help protect yourself. Although boom lifts are a safety measure as an alternative to using a ladder, there is still a height risk, and in the event that you slip or fall from the lift, especially if it is in use and in the air, not having additional safety equipment can be incredibly dangerous.

Being Sensible

Working in a sensible manner when using the boom lift may seem like an obvious consideration, but using our common sense is an important aspect of keeping safe. Standing on the lift properly and not on parts of it that you should not be or leaning out too far may seem obvious, but when you are in the middle of working and focused on the task, it may slip your mind and not standing on the lift in a sensible manner could lead to falls.

Other sensible considerations to make when using a boom lift could include things like taking note of the weather conditions when you are working outside or making sure not to exceed the height and weight limits.

Taking the time to assess these factors and risks is incredibly important to avoid jeopardising the safety of yourself or others.

What is a Boom Lift?

A boom lift is a type of aerial lift that allows you to have both horizontal and vertical reach for any jobs that you need to complete at a height. Boom lifts are the highest reaching elevated work platform; and they allow your staff to be raised and moved both horizontally and vertically to reach their desired worksite. They tend to usually be used for construction, industrial and maintenance projects outdoors but can also be used indoors depending on the type of boom lift you are using.

They are often used for jobs like painting, installing signage, general building maintenance tasks, erecting scaffolding, and lighting works amongst many other projects. They differ from scissor lifts which only go up and down, and as a boom lift can move both horizontally and vertically they allow you to reach areas that you wouldn’t be able to with a scissor lift. They are fitted with wheels so that you can manoeuvre them into the best position possible to reach your desired location and height.

Boom lifts are the highest reaching elevated work platforms available; allowing you to reach even the toughest and highest areas for your job. This makes them a practical option for jobs and projects where you need to reach heights that other lifting platforms don’t allow you to get to. They also offer you increased flexibility, as they can move precisely to reach even the toughest areas – and can move both horizontally and vertically allowing you full control.

They are also available in a variety of fuel operation types such as diesel, battery and electric. Diesel booms tend to be used outdoors and battery booms tend to be used for indoor work. They are also excellent as they can be extended or retracted – making them ideal for any kind of job, regardless of the height that you need to reach.

Why Use Pallet Stackers in Your Warehouse Environment?

Safety and productivity are the two most important objectives in any warehouse environment. If you’re an owner of a warehouse looking to increase overall health and safety, and simultaneously become more efficient, then one of the best choices you can make is to invest in stackers. Pallet stackers can upgrade your warehouse safety and help your staff become more productive in the short and long term.

Below, the team at Cherry Picker looks at why you must utilise pallet stackers in your warehouse – whether you’re a manufacturer, importer, wholesaler or retailer. Read on to learn more, and if you’d like to find out more about our stackers and lifting equipment – please contact the Cherry Picker team via the details at the bottom.

The Various Types of Stackers Available

Stackers come in many different forms, so there is plenty of choice available when you’re looking for a solution for your specific application. At Cherry Picker, we can provide both light duty and heavy-duty solutions, depending on your individual stacking needs and requirements. We offer bespoke stackers which are tailored to your warehouse setting, and will substantially increase the level of safety in your space. Whether you require manual stackers or semi electric stackers, Cherry Picker can help you find the optimal solution.

Alongside this, we can also provide bespoke solutions to clients who have minimal and limited ground space. Our team can build custom-designed lifting equipment which is adapted and suited to your lack of space. Furthermore, we can also provide wide straddle units for environments where materials are being lifted from closed-ended pallets. To discuss our pallet stackers – please get in touch with us today.

Reasons to Use Pallet Stackers

The biggest reason to use stackers is safety. When you’re operating in a warehouse environment and transporting heavy loads of packaging to and from storage, it’s imperative that this is performed with the utmost level of safety and care. There are risks associated with warehouse transportation, and it’s vital that these are minimised to protect all staff and customers.

Choosing the right pallet stacker will allow you to meet all health and safety regulations and achieve necessary safety certifications. It will reduce risks for employees and contribute to a more safe, secure and efficient workplace. Another huge benefit of stackers is that they’ll give you productivity and efficiency gains, speeding up transportation and enabling you to operate quicker. You’ll be able to achieve faster turnaround times, and in turn, your warehouse will run more smoothly and efficiently.

All in all, pallet stackers are a superb option for your warehouse environment. They’ll make lifting, moving and handling all your palletised materials a complete dream. As they don’t take up considerable amounts of physical space, they can be manoeuvred into a diverse array of scenarios – making them a brilliant piece of equipment to have at your disposal. They’re also really cost-effective, they don’t require a large initial investment or any significant maintenance, so they’re a smart solution to go for.
